Replacing the shift motor on your BW1356
Ahh the push-button shift transfer case, to me a nice little invention. No levers to bind up or chew up precious real estate on your floor, easy engagement at speed and very little chance of the darned thing getting shifted into neutral allowing your Bronco to cascade down the hill and run into a bus full of children and nuns.
Lets start off with a little troubleshooting. First listen for clicking comming from the passenger side of the truck when you press the 4x button. If you don't at all then your problem may lay elsewhere. If you do try this little trick. Go under the truck, and hit the motor with a hammer while someone presses the button. If it engages then your problem lies withthe motor.
Removal and Replacement |
Remove the 4 bolts holding the shift motor on. They will be 10mm. Once all the bolts are off, you may have to clock the motor to remove it. |
Unplug the plug wiring. Once apart you will find that there are 3 wires that go into the tailshaft. Cut these wires as close to the middle as possible. Remove the unit. |
This is optional, to allow easy removal and installation install a "Weatherpack" 3-wire plug onto the wires you cut. |
For more positive connections, I suggest soldering the connector and wires together. But doing so can be dangerous due to solder dropping down on ou or your eyes. In my case I cheaped out and just used butt connectors. Just make sure the connections are sealsed with some proper fitting heat shrink tubing.
Once that is all done install your replacement motor. Use some black RTV to seal the mating surface. Connect the plug and test the engagement of your motor to make sure all wires were spliced properly. |
Apply heat to your heat shrinks after testing. double check the tightness of your bolts. Ford FSM recomends 6-8 Ft Lbs of tourque. |
Take her out on the road and if you are on manual hub locks cycle the transfer case a few times. Just do not engage anywhere over 40-45 MPH. Yes the manual says up to 55 MPH it's always advisable to engage at lower speeds. As a maintainence note cycle the transfer case a minimum of twice a month. This will help stave off 2WD "wear-in". |
