Azusa Canyon
August 11th, 2001

This time around the Azusa canyon trip ended up being a lot of fun for all. Even though Jon and Jeremy Sampang whom originally came up with the idea of this trip didn't make it. (Jeremy's 84 Bronco's rear U-joint gave out the day before and Jon's 78 is right now a bit of a basket case) We still had a pretty good showing of MBB members. Those who showed up were Chris85, Chris's Brother Kevin and 2 of his friends (don't have their names), Ford Blue, Rob the Radio Guy, My girlfriend Jennifer, Another friend of mine Mike, and of course myself.

The day started out the same as last time with the trip organizers being late (namely me) this time by only 30 minutes. After meeting at the El Elcanto restraunt at about 8:30 we all decided to head over to the OHV area. Once there we all locked the hubs, secured down equipment, and went for whatever we could find. Chris and Kevin did some doughnuts in the sandy area while Doug "Ford Blue" went for a little hill climb. After that we went to some of the dried up mud pits namely this one to see how bad it really was. We then migrated over to the main mud pit over by the reservoir and had a little fun there. When the crowds started to get thick Doug decided to lone wolf around and ended up getting stuck in the river with water reaching 1" into the cab of his used to be virgin 96 Eddie Bauer. 1 broken tow strap, 1 tweaked front bumper, 1 missing license plate, A dented in tailgate trim piece, 1 virtually destroyed rear bumper, and a wet Doug later he was finally pulled out by one of the park volunteers using a 10,000 Lb ship rope. During the extraction I noticed one of my rear tires looking a little low, so I just played it safe and switched it with my BFG spare. The day almost got cut short when the Bronco almost fell on me. (had 2 lug nuts holding the spare on) Shortly after that we broke for lunch and Doug decided to head home to finish up some chores (Namely hide the bronco from his wife :). After lunch we decided to try out this unused mud pit because the crowds had arrived and were all gathered around the main pit. This was the most fun part of the day. This stuff was very gooey which made it real fun. We ran back and forth just throwing the stuff everywhere we could. 2WD, 4WD up, down, back and forth and even a little sideways. But unfortunately a pair of less attentive 4 wheelers started making things dangerous so instead of risking getting hurt or hurting them we eventually just packed up and headed home.
